Kalavasos is one of Cyprus’ most attractive and lovely villages that belongs to the district of Larnaca. It blends the historic village characteristics and traditions, but at the same time it has nothing to enviously compare with the most contemporary areas of the island. It is situated at an altitude of 80 meters in the Vassilopotamos valley, more or less 40 kilometers southwest of Larnaca. It was given the name originally as “Kali Vasi” by the Saracens, which basically means “Forest Valley”, stressing the village’s extensive forest area that is clearly visible by anyone who is here.
Kalavasos has an artistic character. The permanent display of works by Cypriot artists, the Sculpture Park, the art exhibitions that are being hosted here from time to time, the art and craft workshops and schools, the music events, and the various festivals that are being planned, like “Tenda” every September, serve as evidence that Kalavasos is really a creative community.
What is more, on a daily basis foreign people but also locals living in the village, show how much they admire the beauty, residential arrangement and traditional character of Kalavasos and come back here every time. Kalavasos is seeing great cultural and touristic development thanks to its natural splendors, archeological monuments etc.
The Community Park in Kalavasos, where the train that carried the employees to the quarries in old times is located, is also fascinating. Obviously, we could not pass mentioning the Tenda Archaeological Site, a local historical landmark. It is the most significant Neolithic settlement and was found in 1947.
