Nicosia has strengthened its water supply system with the addition of two new water tanks, significantly increasing water sufficiency in the district. Each reservoir has a capacity of 8,600 cubic metres and forms part of a broader effort to improve the safety, sustainability and modernisation of water infrastructure. The project was completed within 11 months at a cost of just over €2 million.

The new tanks are considered strategic infrastructure, ensuring that households, schools and businesses have reliable access to water. At the same time, further works are underway, including the construction of another reservoir in the Latsia–Geri area, as well as upgrades to pipelines and pumping stations to speed up water transport and improve overall efficiency.

Despite these improvements, water losses remain a major challenge, with some areas losing up to 40 per cent due to ageing networks. To address this, major investments are planned in maintenance and modernisation projects up to 2030, alongside efforts to raise public awareness about water consumption, which remains among the highest in Europe.
