A major urban regeneration project in the historic Ayios Ioannis area of Larnaca has officially moved into the implementation phase, marking a significant step toward upgrading one of the city’s culturally important neighbourhoods. The project aims to improve accessibility, functionality and the overall appearance of public spaces while preserving the unique historical identity of the area.

The redevelopment will include a full upgrade of roads and pavements, underground utility improvements, enhanced street lighting, new urban furniture, additional green spaces and redesigned traffic flow. Plans also include updated road markings, reorganised bus routes, new parking areas and the creation of public squares. A key feature of the project is the pedestrian-focused redesign of the Ayios Ioannis area, improving movement between public spaces and creating a safer, more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Designed with sustainable mobility in mind, the regeneration prioritises pedestrians, cyclists and accessibility for people with mobility needs. The project also seeks to highlight the neighbourhood’s historical and cultural character, which includes notable landmarks such as the Church of Ayios Ioannis and the Tuzla Mosque. Expected to be completed within two years, the initiative forms part of wider efforts to revitalise historic areas and improve everyday quality of life through more modern and accessible urban spaces.
