The village of Mathiatis is situated in the Nicosia district, 22 kilometers from the city of Nicosia. This village is bordered by the settlements of Agia Varvara, Lythrodonda, Sias, Delikipou, and Analionta. Due to the two mines in the area, Mathiatis is mentioned on the earliest maps made by early travelers, demonstrating the significance it had for archaeology and history.
In recent years the population in the community has seen an increase. Moreover, the village's name is said to have originated in one of four ways. The first story claims that residents of the Mathiatis settlement once farmed several vines, created wine, drank, and got drunk. The village was given the name Mathiatis based on this incident and the verb “metho”.
The village of Mathiatis is home to two historic mines, both of which are considered part of the World Heritage. The oldest mine, dating back to 600 BC, is located south of the village, at the base of Roundylos hill, and is known as the Roundylos mine. The second mine, known as the "Kokkinoantonis" mine, is a newer mining site and produces gold, silver, copper, and iron. Both mines are rich in history and offer a unique glimpse into the past of Mathiatis village. The Mathiatis village is also home to a large dam, built to provide irrigation for the surrounding area and to generate hydroelectric power.
The village's rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and outdoor recreation opportunities make it a popular destination for those seeking a peaceful and picturesque place to call home.
