Located 56 km from the capital city of Nicosia, Katydata is a picturesque village that sits at an elevation of 275 meters above sea level. The village is situated in the semi-mountainous region of Solias, on the eastern side of the Clarios valley. Two rivers, the Karkotis and Setrachos, flow through the village, adding to its natural beauty and charm.
For many years, the village of Katydata thrived as a result of its proximity to neighboring mines, including Foukasa, Mavrovouni, and Apliki. The majority of the village's residents worked in these mines, and their labor contributed greatly to the local economy. Historical sources indicate that Katydata has been inhabited since prehistoric times, dating back to the early Bronze Age and continuing through the Hellenistic period. Despite this long and rich history, the village has faced many challenges over the years, particularly in the modern era. Following the Roman period, Katydata experienced difficult times, as the local economy struggled to find a stable footing. However, with the reopening of the Foukasa mine, the village experienced a resurgence, and for many years was a prosperous and thriving community.
The origin of the name of Katydata can be traced back to the Greek words "Kato" and "Idor," which together mean "under water." This name is fitting, as the village is situated in an area where underground water flows abundantly. Interestingly, the village was known by a slightly different name on medieval maps, where it was referred to as "Cattidata." Despite this slight difference in spelling, however, the name still conveyed the same meaning.
Additionally, Katydata has several attractions worth visiting. One of them is the railway which has been preserved and is now a popular tourist destination. Another attraction is the Plaster statue workshop, which produces traditional plaster statues and souvenirs. The village also has a Museum of Mining Heritage, built in the center of the village with exhibits related to the tools of the miners, galleries of the mine, objects made from antiquity with copper raw material, and others. At the southern heights of the village, one can visit the community park that offers tranquility and enjoyment of the view of the Foukassa Mines, the lush valley of Clarios, and the Morphou Sea. The park is a great spot for hiking and picnics and is a popular spot for nature lovers.
