Ayia Napa is a village 40 meters above sea level belonging to the district of Famagusta, in the island's southeast. It is roughly 6 kilometers from Paralimni and 16 kilometers from the ghost town of Famagusta. Ayia Napa is well known and loved by people from all around the globe for its magnificent beaches and exciting night life. The name of Ayia Napa is originated from Panagia’s surname, known as Napa since an icon of her had been discovered in a Napa. The word napa is ancient Greek (napi) which translates to a forest in a valley. Tradition holds that there was once a napa, or forest, in the area where this world-famous village is located today. People initially referred to her as Panagia tis Napa, which was later changed to Agia Napa. On the site of the medieval monastery that was built in the fourteenth century, is the cave where the icon had been found.
The monastery at Ayia Napa is one of the village’s attractions. A famous century-old tree that is distinct to the area, stands right next to it. The World Council of Churches' conferences are currently housed in the former monastery.
After the famous Greek poet Giorgos Seferis visited the village and composed two poems titled "Ayiannapa" A' and B', the village started to gain greater attention. Following the catastrophe of 1974 and the loss of Famagusta town, Ayia Napa saw exceptional expansion and has established itself as one of the most popular destinations for tourists who arrive to enjoy all the amazing things the area has to offer.
Ayia Napa features cycling trails, a national forest park, and breathtaking sea caves which are very famous. The coastal promenade, the outdoor sculpture park, and numerous works of street art are some of the things one can enjoy here. The entire year is filled with regular festivals and events that feature traditional music and dance such as, the Medieval Festival. Ayia Napa is substantially larger and more dispersed than most other vacation destinations. What distinguishes the village and may be a singular phenomenon on the island, is the number of tourist-related structures such as hotels and residential real estate which are wide spread across Ayia Napa. Not only local visitors, but also foreign tourists, are drawn to the area by its moderate climate, the sea’s deep blue color and the beautiful golden sand on its beaches. Nissi Beach, Makronissos and Sandy Bay are just some of Ayia Napa’s many wonderful beaches. Ayia Napa's 14 beaches received the EU Blue Flag for their high standards of cleanliness and amenities.
Nissi Avenue, one of the area’s main roads resembles a mini resort in itself with its liveliness and a selection of eateries, pubs, bars, boutiques, etc. In the center are most of the nightclubs and bars, which are great for a fun night out with friends.
