Nicosia’s old city is undergoing a major transformation through a €28 million regeneration programme aimed at reviving historic neighbourhoods and improving daily life. New projects along the Green Line include upgraded pedestrian streets and restored building façades, while wider infrastructure works are improving roads, public spaces and parking facilities across the area.

A key driver of the revival is the growing student presence in the historic centre. New university facilities, student residences and private dormitories are bringing fresh energy to the area, with demand for accommodation expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Additional housing projects are already under way, and discussions continue on expanding incentives to support student living in the old city.

At the same time, authorities are tackling long-standing problems linked to safety, neglect and illegal housing. Coordinated inspections have led to the closure of unsafe buildings, removal of dangerous installations and improvements in lighting, cleanliness and signage. With renewed focus on heritage, culture and authentic urban life, the regeneration effort aims to turn the old city into a vibrant, safe and attractive place for residents, students and visitors alike.
