Cyprus proposes a ground-breaking €35 million subsidy proposal for establishing a reliable Very High Capacity Network (VHCN) access in underserved rural areas, taking a significant step towards digital equality.

Stella Michaelidou, the commissioner for state aid control in Cyprus, has unveiled a significant €35 million subsidy program designed to provide strong Very High Capacity Network (VHCN) connectivity in rural areas lacking private sector participation.

The effort, which is run by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, is a proactive move to address geographical inequities and the low market viability regarding the availability of broadband internet connection in underserved areas. In a recent press release, the Commissioner's Office emphasised this significant breakthrough.

In places where the current service is insufficient, this effort, which is in line with the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aims to give access to a super-fast network to about 44,000 newly installed connections. In addition to infrastructure, the project aims to close the digital divide between urban and rural areas so that technology and its advantages can be accessed by everyone in the whole country.

According to the news release that was provided, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan guidelines and financial support from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility served as the foundation for the project's acceptance. Notably, a majority of Cyprus' cities have already adopted fibre technology, providing access speeds of as much as 2 Gbps, which is outstanding. Offering unparalleled access speeds of up to an impressive 2 Gbps for downloads and 500 Mbps for uploads. By redefining the parameters of connectivity, this vast network also rockets Cyprus into a time in which the potential of the digital world is limitless.

By making this important step towards improving internet access in rural areas, Cyprus shows its dedication to closing the digital gap and promoting inclusion for every citizen. The Very High Capacity Network program is a significant step towards a more inclusive digital future and has the power to improve lives and empower communities.
