The village of Liopetri has existed under the same name since medieval times and is referred to as "Ligopetri" on old maps. It is one of the so-called Kokkinohoria, and the village is situated in the Free district of Famagusta. Its delicious pomegranates and figs are among the best-known products the village produces.
The village of Liopetri is recognized for its exceptional setting, which has gained a lot of fame across all of Cyprus. The Liopetri river that is located here and flows with its fishing boats, as well as the chapel of Ayios Georgios Tropaioforos are distinguishing the area. The traditional houses built of bricks, mud, and straw are among the noteworthy views one can see when strolling through the village's streets.
In the center of the village a barn stands imposingly, commemorating the great battle between locals and the British troops in 1958. It is now a memorial to the fallen of the National Liberation War, 1955-1959. Each year on August 15 the community honors the church of Panagia Eleousa with a customary feast. This church is one of the most exquisitely designed churches of the island, with its pointed roof and single-aisled basilica with a dome. It is said to date from the 16th century.
