Cyprus to remove 258 speed bumps amid public complaints
Cyprus is set to remove 258 of its estimated 2,500 speed bumps following complaints from the public about unnecessary installations and vehicle damage. So far, 104 speed bumps have already been removed, with another 148 scheduled for removal as part of ongoing roadworks. The government is digitising and cataloguing all speed bumps to better manage their locations, while keeping those in sensitive areas like schools and parks.
The removals are taking place across multiple municipalities, including Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paralimni, among others. Citizens, municipalities, schools, or organized groups can request speed bump removal, which is evaluated by the Department of Public Works and a Technical Committee. The process typically takes around a month for a decision, and the cost of removing each speed bump is about €1,200, often incorporated into existing road maintenance projects.
Where speed bumps are removed, alternative safety measures are being implemented. These include mobile speed camera enforcement, road and intersection redesigns, updated signage, speed limit reductions, and urban planning improvements. In many cases, the original reasons for installing the speed bumps, such as missing sidewalks or incomplete intersections, no longer apply, making these alternatives more suitable for road safety.
