The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has issued a tender for construction and infrastructure works to install electricity storage systems at three substations in Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos, along with maintenance at other substations. The project, approved by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority, will integrate storage systems into the national electricity grid under the Cyprus Transmission System Operator.

The planned installations include a 40MW, 80MWh system at the Athalassa substation in Nicosia, and 40MW, 160MWh systems at both the Anatoliko substation in Paphos and the Free Industrial Zone substation in Larnaca. Construction costs are estimated at €14.5 million, while the battery systems themselves are valued at €41 million, largely funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The tenders aim to have the storage systems operational by June 2026, enabling the transmission operator to manage energy efficiently and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the grid. Interested contractors can submit bids for one or more substations by 3 December 2025.
