Revitalising Nicosia: A new plan for the city centre
ETEK, the scientific and technical chamber, has proposed new measures to revive Nicosia’s city centre, pointing out that past efforts have not worked as planned. They say the city needs a clear, updated strategy supported by strong rules, starting with a revision of the sustainable urban mobility plan. ETEK warns that without coordination, even well-planned projects risk being left unfinished, causing frustration for residents and businesses.
Their proposals include using empty buildings, taxing idle properties and reinvesting the money, speeding up approvals for changes of use, and simplifying planning rules. They also suggest creating a clear identity for the city centre to attract small and medium-sized businesses. In addition, they recommend new green spaces around the old city walls to provide shade for pedestrians. Temporary measures are suggested too, like weekend traffic bans on Makarios Avenue, short-stay parking support, moving the Solomou Square bus terminal, and cultural and commercial events to encourage walking.
ETEK stresses that political support, funding, and public accountability are essential. With recent government consultations, conditions are favourable to move forward. Their goal is to turn Nicosia’s historic core into a lively, well-organised city centre with good infrastructure, clear rules, and a strong identity, bringing real benefits to both residents and businesses.
