Larnaca crowned European Capital of Culture 2030 – a celebration of heritage and creativity

Larnaca has officially been named European Capital of Culture 2030, marking a historic moment for the city after years of preparation and a closely contested race with Limassol. The announcement was broadcast live, concluding an intense evaluation process that included presentations, city visits by the Expert Committee, and the submission of detailed cultural vision dossiers. With the title, Larnaca also secures the €1.5 million Melina Mercouri Prize, awarded by the European Commission in recognition of the quality of its proposal.

The decision triggered immediate celebrations across Larnaca, where residents poured into the streets in scenes reminiscent of major national victories. Car horns echoed through central avenues, people waved flags, sang, danced, and embraced in spontaneous displays of pride and emotion. Videos captured citizens leaning out of car windows, forming impromptu parades and creating a festive atmosphere fuelled by joy and community spirit.

The moment reached its peak when the Common Ground team — key contributors to Larnaca’s cultural bid — stood up and danced to traditional music to applause from those around them. The images reflect a city united, proud, and confident in the cultural identity it worked hard to showcase. For Larnaca, this achievement is more than a title; it is a celebration of its heritage, creativity and belief in its future.
