Cyprus hydrogen project secures permits and EU support

Cyprus is moving forward with its first hydrogen production and refuelling station, which has now received the necessary building permits and secured €7.5 million in funding, with 60% coming from European sources. The station will be located in the Aradippou area of Larnaca and is expected to produce 150 tonnes of hydrogen per year, equivalent to about 627 tonnes of diesel.

The project will initially target heavy and public vehicles, with plans to expand to private vehicles in the future. The government is also considering subsidies for hydrogen-powered vehicles, similar to those previously offered for electric cars. Converting conventional fuel cars to hydrogen is not possible, so vehicles must be purchased with pre-installed hydrogen technology.

Hydrogen offers additional benefits beyond transport. It can be produced using renewable energy, acting as a form of energy storage for use whenever needed. Compared to electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars can be refuelled quickly, without concerns about battery range or long charging times, offering a practical and sustainable alternative for Cyprus’ transport future.
