Nestled within the Paphos province of Cyprus, Timi stands as a picturesque village, approximately 10 kilometers away from the capital. Its proximity to Paphos, along with its distance of 55 kilometers from Limassol and 140 kilometers from Nicosia, makes it easily accessible for visitors.
The village of Timi holds an intriguing past, with the exact year of its establishment shrouded in uncertainty. Legends surrounding the origins of its name offer two captivating versions. One links Timi to the ancient Dimes of Achaia, as the initial settlers are believed to have hailed from that region. The second version alludes to the reverence (timi in Greek) shown by prehistoric inhabitants towards the goddess Aphrodite, a deity of great significance in the area.
Throughout history, Timi served as a crucial crossroads between the ancient cities of Palaipaphos and Paphos during the Frankish rule. The village, once a fief, played a pivotal role in connecting these two ancient settlements, fostering cultural exchange and trade.
Once a harmonious, bustling village where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots coexisted peacefully, Timi underwent significant changes following the events of the Turkish invasion in 1974. As a result, a wave of refugees sought shelter in the village, leaving an indelible mark on its demographics. The presence of a refugee settlement serves as a poignant reminder of Timi's complex history.
Today, Timi thrives as a community largely engaged in agricultural pursuits, complemented by employment opportunities at the nearby Paphos International Airport and the capital city. Steeped in antiquity, Timi boasts a wealth of historical and ancient sites waiting to be explored. Noteworthy among these are the intriguing "burrows," which once supplied water to the stone drinking fountains scattered throughout the settlement. Another notable landmark is the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia, which, during the era of Ottoman rule, underwent a transformation into a mosque. Today, it stands under the careful protection of the Department of Antiquities. Hidden beneath its surface, one can only speculate about the potential treasures of internal adornment concealed behind plaster-covered frescoes.
Despite its modest size, Timi embraces its communal spirit, evident through the presence of a local café and park that foster social interaction and leisure activities. The village takes pride in its primary school, which caters to children from the wider region, nurturing young minds within its walls. Nature enthusiasts will find solace in the vast Timi forest, offering a serene sanctuary away from the bustle of daily life. To complete the experience, several guesthouses and charming local taverns await visitors, providing a warm welcome and a taste of traditional Cypriot hospitality near the village settlement.
