The original settlement of Astromeritis consisted of houses constructed of adobe and roads made of stone. The houses were often adorned with beautifully sculpted frames around the main entrance. There are several noteworthy old homes in the village, featuring a traditional two-roomed bedroom known as "dichoro," a separate kitchen, paved courtyards with colorful flowers, barn stables, and mud ovens. The homes were surrounded by high walls, adding a touch of charm and privacy.
As the village has grown and expanded, it has started to move towards the new Troodos-Astromeritis Road. This part of the village is predominantly home to new constructions, showcasing modern architecture and amenities. These new homes contrast with the traditional architecture of the original village, but they offer modern living spaces that attract new residents to the area. Despite this expansion, the traditional houses and streets of the original village remain an essential part of Astromeritis's unique character and charm.
The name of Astromeritis has several different versions and theories surrounding its origin. One of the earliest theories suggests that the "Asinaioi," a group of people from the town of "Asina" in Peloponisos, left their homeland and founded the small town of "Asinou" in Cyprus. There is a village named "Astromeri" located close to "Asina," as well as the town of "Astros," from which some of its inhabitants migrated to Cyprus alongside the people of Asina, subsequently founding the village of Astromeritis. This theory sheds light on the possibility of the village's name having roots in ancient history, possibly dating back to the time of the settlement of the Greeks on the island. The name could have been derived from the names of the other towns and villages, such as "Asinou," "Astromeri," and "Astros," with which Astromeritis has a connection.
