Larnaca is one of the oldest cities in Cyprus, built on the southeast coast of the island. The city is the successor of ancient Kitia, one of the most important kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, birthplace, among others, of the ancient philosopher Zenon. The story of Cimon is well known, who died besieging the city from the sea when it was under Phoenician rule, he demanded from his colleagues not to reveal his death so as not to demoralize the allies, attacked and eventually won the naval battle. A great earthquake in 77 AD. destroyed the city, which was rebuilt from scratch. Modern Larnaca is a beautiful city, which experienced rapid development from the 1960s onwards. In 1974, due to the invasion, the Nicosia airport was closed and the Larnaca International Airport was built, which resulted in more growth in the city, making it a great hub for travel in the Middle East region. Today the city of Larnaca is the third largest city on the island, with a population of 72,000 (World Population Review).
The name of Larnaca is associated with the death and burial of Saint Lazarus in the area. More specifically, it comes from the word "larnaca" which in ancient times meant "stone sarcophagus". In the area of ancient Kiti, many sarcophagi were found, among them two sarcophagi in the sanctuary of the church of Agios Lazarus, which is believed to be his burial place. So, from this large number of “larnaca” in the area, the city was renamed from Kitio to Larnaca. It is worth noting that during the Middle Ages, Larnaca was called "Alykes", due to the existence of its Salt Lake. During the period of Turkish rule (1570-1878), as it was an important port, Larnaca was known as "Skala" because the ships made a ladder (station) there.
In the southwest of the district, one can visit Aliki, just beyond the airport which is the main and largest airport of Cyprus. It is an important wetland of the island, protected by the Ramsar Convention and the NATURA program. Actually, the Salt Lake is a complex of four lakes.
