Ergates was one of the communities of the ancient kingdom of Tamassus, and its name is directly linked to the workers who worked in the copper mines that were in operation at the time. The miners chose this location due to the abundance of water from the Pediou River or Pithia and small hills that provided protection from floods. The village has retained its name over time.
