One of the charming villages of Pitsilia and among the 20 highest in Cyprus at 1050 meters above sea level, Fterikoudi is one of the lovely villages of Troodos and is located 48 kilometers southwest of the capital. It is believed that Kalamithasa survivors who had endured the devastation of the Turks created the village of Fterikoudi. Today, at the site of Kalamithasa is a chapel and tomb that belonged to the Saint and Prophet Avvacum. It is interesting that recent excavations at the settlement have unearthed what is thought to be a Mycenaean-era temple and tomb entrance.
Fterikoudi is claimed to have gotten its name from a fern called "fteritzin," "fterikoudin," or "fterikia," which is common in the area around the settlement. Others think the village's name came from the fact that it was situated on a slope (fteri).
The village is constantly developing with major projects planned to be done in the upcoming time. A Folk Art Museum will be created in the village, an excursion site will be created, the central square of the settlement will get beautified, a pavement starting at the central square and continuing up to the church of Agios Nicolaos will be constructed, and lastly, a Cultural Centre at the old Primary School building will be created.
Moreover, in the community of Fterikoudi, various shades of green predominate, and cultivated and uncultivated land expanses mix to provide scenes of exceptional beauty. Hazel, nut, apple, and cherry trees, as well as fruit and vegetables, may be found in the village's farmed stretches of land. Olive trees and some vines are also grown there. While it is important to note that there are 1300 olive trees in the hamlet, many of which are very old, olive tree cultivation is relatively developed compared to vine cultivation. Contrarily, just 370 square kilometers of land are covered with vines, and the only grape varietals grown there are "xinisteri" and black. Moreover, vine growers use grape juice to make wine, "zivania," and other conventional goods.
