Kapedes is a charming village situated at the base of the Machairas Mountains, approximately 25 kilometers south of the bustling city of Nicosia. This semi-mountainous community boasts a vast landscape that is predominantly hilly, with little to no flat areas. The village is visually divided by the Agios Onoufrios stream, which is a tributary of the Pedieos river. In addition to the Agios Onoufrios, the tributaries of Gialia also run through the village, providing additional natural features that make this area so unique. The landscape of Kapedes is a natural work of art, with its hills and valleys offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and countryside.
Kapedes has a rich history that dates back to the Copper Age, as evidenced by the many mines that exist in the surrounding area of Ancient Tamassus. In fact, historical records indicate that Kapedes was home to one of the largest copper processing plants of its time. There are several theories regarding the origin of the name Kapedes. The most popular one states that the village was once part of the Monastery of Archangel and that ten disobedient monks were banished from the monastery. The remaining monks would refer to these individuals as “up to the ten children”. Over time, the term "deka pedes" (ten children) evolved into the name Kapedes.
For centuries, the area to the west of Kapedes has been a hub of mining activity, with miners searching for copper and pyrite in the rich earth. These miners used small trains to descend into the mines and collect dirt, which they then brought back to the surface to be washed and sorted. This activity created a massive amphitheater-like basin that grew larger with each passing year as more and more earth was excavated. Over time, this mining activity became a way of life for the people of Kapedes, who relied on it for their livelihoods. However, as technology advanced and new methods of mining were developed, the demand for copper from this area decreased, and the mine was eventually abandoned by its owner.
