Nestled in the district of Paphos, lies the village of Miliou. It is situated approximately 25 kilometers north of Paphos, 90 kilometers northwest of Limassol, and 170 kilometers southwest of Nicosia. The village is surrounded by pine trees, orange trees, and mountain ranges, making it one of the most picturesque mountain villages in Cyprus.
With an area of around 3 square kilometers, Miliou is one of the smaller settlements on the island, yet it is constantly undergoing development and modernization. Interestingly, an American corporation has announced plans to build two strategic centers for its operations in Miliou.
The village borders the communities of Giolou and Lukrunu, and is just a few minutes to the west of the city of Paphos. Legend has it that the name "Miliou" comes from the Greek word "neromili," meaning watermill, as there used to be many of them along the river Nerades, which now flows through the valley of the village every winter and gives life to the area. The village was also known for its apple trees in the past, hence the old welcoming phrase, "Welcome to the chrisomiliou (golden apple)”.
The village has a small square with two traditional taverns and a cozy cafeteria, while the old school building has been converted into a cultural center. The village also has an old drinking fountain and an olive mill. The area is a nature lover's paradise, perfect for bird watching with countless nightingales in the village. Miliou is famous for its traditional sweets, such as palouzes, soutzoukos, petimezi, and carob honey. The village still produces these local delicacies using the white-honey, which is a rare and unique ingredient. Miliou celebrates its love for honey by organizing an annual festival in its honor.
