The Attorney-General’s office in Cyprus has rejected a proposal to limit the number of short-term rental properties a person or company can register. The idea was to regulate the fast-growing market of short-term rentals, such as those listed on Airbnb. The Deputy Tourism Minister suggested allowing only two properties per person or company in the self-catering accommodation register to prevent large investors from avoiding hotel regulations.

Although the cap was rejected, the issue is still under discussion. The government had hoped this would stop investors from buying multiple properties and operating them like hotels without following the same rules. The House Commerce Committee will now review broader regulations for short-term rentals, including new EU rules on the sector.
