Cypriots have elected their new local leaders

The people of Cyprus have chosen their new local leaders in an election that was delayed for over two years due to big changes in how local government works. The turnout for this important election was 50.5%.

Nicosia District results

With 54% of the vote, Constantinos Yiorkadjis overcame Andreas Ashiotis to become the District Organisation President of Nicosia. With 56.8% of the vote, Charalambos Prountzos was elected as the next mayor of Nicosia, while Nikos Tornaritis received 30.9%.

Other Nicosia areas

Strovolos: Stavros Stavrinides was elected Mayor with 38.8% of the vote.

Latsia-Yeri: Christos Pittaras won the Mayor’s seat with 69.3%.

Lakatamia-Tseri: Fotoula Hadjipapa was re-elected with 50%.

Nicosia-Idalion: Stavros Hadjiyiannis became Mayor with 52.9%.

Limassol District

Yiannis Tsouloftas was elected President of the Limassol District Organisation with 47.9%, narrowly beating Vasilis Demetriades, who got 43.7%. Yiannis Armeftis is the new Mayor of Limassol.

Famagusta District

Yiannis Karousos, former Mayor of Ayia Napa and former Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, won the position of President of the Famagusta District Organisation with 54.9%, overcame Theodoros Pyrillis, who received 29.7%. Christos Zanettos is the new Mayor of Ayia Napa, and Giorgos Nikolettos is the new Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia.

Larnaca District

Angelos Hadjicharalambous was elected as the President of the Larnaca District Organisation. Andreas Vyras and Iasonas Iasonides were re-elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. Neofytos Fakontis is the new Deputy Mayor of Oroklini, and Marios Armenis was elected unopposed in Livadia. In Aradippou, Christodoulos Partou was elected Mayor, with Evanthia Savva as Deputy Mayor.

Paphos District

With just 38 votes, Charalambos Pittokopitis overcame Costas Constantinou and became the Paphos District Organisation president. Re-elected Mayor Fedonas Fedonos earned 60.3% of the vote, compared to 39.7% for his opponent, Evros Loizids. Nikos Palios received 42.93% of the vote and was elected mayor of East Paphos. Andreas Sikkis of the AKEL-EDEK coalition received 34.9% of the vote and took the deputy mayor position in Geroskipou. In Timi, Giorgos Polykarpou won the vote.
