After 15 years on hold, a €2.6 million development at Larnaca’s salt lakes is set to move forward, with Larnaca Municipality and the Department of Environment launching an architectural competition for the project. The Salt Lakes Park will cover over 40,000 square metres, including the former leprosy hospital site, and will feature an Environmental Information Centre as its focal point, highlighting the area’s ecological significance within the Natura 2000 protected zone. The park will integrate educational, recreational, and nature-focused spaces, including pathways, viewing points, benches, and bird-watching areas.

The development is divided into a Full Development Zone for the Environmental Information Centre (about 1,800 sqm) and a Mild Development Zone for the surrounding park (about 13,200 sqm), which will feature outdoor educational and recreational spaces, shelters, and easy access to the existing salt lake path. Parking for visitors and staff will include at least 25 vehicle spaces, 15 bicycle spaces, and provisions for disabled access.

The Environmental Information Centre will serve as an educational hub, offering permanent exhibitions, multimedia learning, a laboratory, library, lecture hall, and a cafeteria. Exhibits will focus on the salt lakes’ natural environment, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, while interactive panels and digital applications will enhance visitor engagement. The project aims to transform the area into a green lung for recreation, environmental education, and community interaction, blending sustainability with public enjoyment.
