New breakwaters to tackle coastal erosion in Paphos
Plans are advancing to strengthen coastal protection along the southwestern shoreline of Paphos and Geroskipou, with a series of new breakwaters proposed to address ongoing erosion. The project includes the construction of 16 structures designed to safeguard vulnerable coastal areas and preserve beaches that have been increasingly affected in recent years.
The planned works will feature both parallel and transverse breakwaters, stretching along the coastline from Geroskipou to the municipal baths area of Paphos. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with preparatory steps, including a tender process, scheduled for the coming year. The design also incorporates a designated access point for transporting construction materials, located near the Ezousa River, in order to minimise disruption to beaches and nearby businesses.
The initiative is considered crucial as coastal erosion has intensified, with sections of the shoreline already significantly reduced. By reinforcing the coast, the project aims to protect natural landscapes, support local communities and ensure the long-term sustainability of one of the island’s most important coastal regions.
