Investments support resilient fishing sector and rural growth

Support measures for the fishing sector in Cyprus are continuing through a series of funding programmes aimed at strengthening coastal communities, improving working conditions and promoting sustainable marine practices. Since 2023, financial assistance has helped modernise dozens of fishing vessels, while additional support has been introduced for small-scale coastal fishermen to help them continue operating and investing in their profession.

The initiatives also focus on improving the wider fishing and aquaculture sector through investments in seafood production, processing and marine environmental management. Projects linked to coastal tourism and local heritage are helping fishing communities showcase their cultural identity, while new environmental measures aim to support cleaner seas and better waste management. Plans are also under way to introduce specialised collection systems for fishing equipment in several fishing shelters around the island, encouraging more sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.

Alongside support for the fishing industry, infrastructure projects are progressing in the wider Polis Chrysochous area to strengthen water security and improve public infrastructure. These include upgrades to water supply systems, improvements to irrigation networks, flood protection planning and the development of wastewater infrastructure. The combined projects form part of a broader strategy focused on supporting resilient rural communities, sustainable development and long-term environmental protection.
