Cyprus steps up fight against illegal estate agents
In 2024, the Cyprus Real Estate Agents Registration Council recorded 125 convictions for illegal real estate activity, highlighting its commitment to cracking down on unlicensed brokers. Around 400 criminal cases were filed, with 90 individuals and 35 companies already convicted and many more cases still awaiting trial. These actions were based on complaints from licensed agents, the public, and inspectors, showing the scale of the problem in the Cypriot property market.
The council regularly publishes the names of convicted parties and urges the public to always verify an agent’s professional license before doing business. Council president Marinos Kineyirou emphasized that working with unlicensed agents is a criminal offence and warned that fraud is still a serious issue in the industry. To help protect consumers, the council offers an official website and contact options to confirm an agent’s credentials and encourages using their trusted property platform for safe transactions.
