Community unites for two-day coastal clean-up in Dhekelia
More than 250 volunteers took part in a two-day coastal clean-up in the Dhekelia area of Larnaca on November 5 and 17, working to protect Cyprus’ marine and coastal environment. Participants from four local communities cleared waste from shorelines and seabeds across Dhekelia, Ormidia, and Xylophagou, collecting a total of 185.56kg of marine litter, including plastic containers, glass bottles, metal cans, and plastic wrappers.
Although this year’s collection was lower than last year’s 437kg, organisers emphasised that marine litter remains a serious environmental challenge. The initiative highlighted the importance of community cooperation, environmental awareness, and shared responsibility in protecting coastal and marine habitats.
Officials praised the volunteers for their efforts, noting that every clean-up event serves as a reminder that protecting the sea begins with individual action combined with collective effort, reinforcing the need for ongoing community engagement and environmental stewardship.
