Community cleanup effort clears harbour floor in Paphos
Nearly two tonnes of trash, including dozens of car, motorcycle, and truck wheels, were removed from the seabed of Kato Paphos harbour during a large-scale community cleanup on Sunday morning. The two-hour operation involved 18 professional divers alongside volunteers, students, local residents, and representatives from the Paphos municipality, environment and fisheries departments, the fishermen association, and NGOs.
The campaign, now in its second year, aimed to clear litter and hazardous objects from the harbour, protecting marine life and raising public awareness about marine pollution, especially among young people. All collected waste was documented by AKTI for scientific analysis to better understand the impact on the local ecosystem.
Officials from the Cyprus Ports Authority stressed their commitment to keeping the ports clean, safe, and environmentally sustainable, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between authorities, NGOs, and the community.
