Agreements for flood control projects in Kamares

With the signing of contracts for the construction of essential facilities to protect the Kamares area of Larnaca against flooding, an important turning point has been reached. The Ministry of Interior will provide all of the funding for the project, which is expected to cost €6.436 million. The project is expected to be finished in 30 months, with work starting in January 2025.

Andreas Vyras, the mayor of Larnaca, focused on the significance of this effort during a press conference, calling it a "crucial step for Larnaca and its residents". "The Kamares area had significant flooding issues in the past, which causes considerable damage", the mayor said, expressing joy that the long-anticipated project is now proceeding. It is essential to have efficient flood protection. He also pointed out their commitment to getting the project forward the end, which ensures the security and well-being of people in the area that had experienced significant flooding, but without casualties.

Additionally, Mayor Vyras thanked the current chairman of the Larnaca District Municipality and the former director of the Larnaca Drainage Board for their important contributions to the project's success. He pointed out that the project's success has been and will be largely dependent on the collaboration of all agencies involved.

Angelos Hadjicharalambous, President of the Larnaca EOA, hailed the day as "historic" for Larnaca and its EOA. He described the initiative as a decisive step toward addressing the long-standing flood risks in Kamares, which was particularly devastated by floods in 2014.

Major interventions included in the project's scope involve changing the riverbed, establishing new water channels, and demolishing and rebuilding bridges. By following these steps, the area's risk of future disasters will be greatly decreased and strong flood protection will be provided.

This project is a team effort to strengthen the area's resistance to natural disasters, providing Kamares residents with security and hope for years ahead.
