Accessible nature: Cyprus launches “Inclusive Routes” initiative

A new cross-border programme called “Inclusive Routes” has been launched in cooperation with Greece to improve accessibility in forest recreation areas, cultural heritage sites, and tourist destinations across Cyprus. The project includes constructing and upgrading trails, enhancing picnic areas, creating observation points and accessible parking, and renovating hospitality and recreation facilities to make nature more accessible for people with disabilities, families with children, the elderly, and those with temporary mobility challenges.

Work will take place in several key areas, including the Platania and Livadi tou Passia picnic sites in Troodos, the Kampi loop in Machairas, Mavralis in Paphos, the Cape Greco environmental centre, Stavros tis Psokas, and the Athalassa and Limassol national forest parks. The programme is coordinated with five partner organisations from Cyprus and Greece, such as the Cyprus Paraplegics Organisation, the Syros–Ermoupolis municipality, and the Limassol district development agency.

The forestry department emphasized that environmental protection and accessibility will go hand in hand, using universal design principles and digital tools to help visitors navigate the areas safely and comfortably. The project aims to ensure that natural and cultural sites can be enjoyed by everyone, promoting both social inclusion and respect for the environment.
