Barn owls play an important role in maintaining ecological balance by naturally controlling rodent populations, according to wildlife authorities in Cyprus. A dedicated barn owl programme to boost natural pest control has been running for decades, supporting both agriculture and public health by reducing crop damage and limiting the need for chemical pest management.

A single pair of barn owls can consume thousands of rodents each year, making them highly effective natural pest controllers. However, experts warn that the use of rodenticides can have unintended environmental consequences, as toxins may enter the food chain and affect non-target wildlife species. Studies have shown traces of such substances in a large proportion of examined predator samples, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with chemical control methods.

Monitoring efforts also show positive signs for the species, with successful breeding recorded in artificial nesting sites supported under the long-running programme. Wildlife authorities note that sustained protection and monitoring over the years have helped strengthen barn owl populations, reinforcing their role as a key natural ally in sustainable ecosystem management and biodiversity protection.
