One of Paphos' four municipalities, Peyia, is situated around 15 kilometers from the city center. The picturesque locality is known for its natural beauty overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, its popular sandy beaches, its stunning sea caves and so much more.
It appears that the name of the municipality was influenced greatly from the Venetians because during their rule, they used to call the nearby port “Baeia”, which in Latin means “bay”, and over time the area became Peyia. There is also a small island named Geronisos which is situated between Egypt and Cyprus, opposite the port of Peyia. Some old structures that were found on the Geronisos island indicate that the its was formerly populated. The Agios Georgios port is another attraction of Peyia with its small fishing boats, making the scenery stunning. Moreover, the EDRO 3 wreck in Peyia is creating a breathtaking view from the shore. Local and international tourists alike are very interested in the ship, and they simply flood the region to take pictures of it against the blue-green Mediterranean waters. What is more, Peyia has a geologically and biologically interesting landscape with its unique sea caves standing out.
