Legend has it that Gerakies village was named after a unique feature of the village's original layout. According to local tradition, in the past, each elder of the village had a small house. This unique arrangement gave the village the appearance of a group of small houses or "gerakia" in Greek, which eventually led to the village being named Gerakies. While the origin of the village's name remains a matter of debate, the unique architecture and layout of the village continue to be a source of fascination for visitors.
Gerakies village began with the construction of the Church of Saint Nicholas and the surrounding area. In the early days, the village did not extend beyond this point, and the houses that currently line the motorway did not exist. The village school was built in close proximity to the church, and it is an impressive structure with a spacious courtyard. Today, the school remains an important landmark in the village and serves as a symbol of the village's rich cultural heritage.
In the past, the people of Gerakies were mainly occupied with two major industries. The first was the production of tar from the pine trees, which was a common activity in the area due to the abundance of pine forests. The second industry was the production of local alcoholic beverages, including wines, zivania, but also Palouzes. These traditional products are still produced in the village today. The production of these goods remains an important part of the local economy.
